With Nobel Prizes being awarded in the past few weeks, I want to share a story you might not know...
Alfred Nobel got quite a surprise as he picked up the newspaper one morning and read his own obituary. His brother had died, but the newspaper goofed.
“The merchant of death is dead,” it read, “Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday.”
Nobel invented dynamite in 1866 and it made him rich. One morning, he found out what people really thought of him when he read his own obituary.
"The merchant of death is dead." It was actually his brother who died.
Shocked to learn how he would be remembered, he quickly changed how he lived and left a philanthropic legacy called the Nobel Prize.
I want you to think about your personal brand, why it is important, and how to craft it. If someone searches you on Google, is that who you REALLY are? What does your social media say about you?
More importantly, what do others say when someone mentions your name? And when you're not in the room? It is tougher to find out and often people are more candid when they are not on record.
Nobel received an unusual gift. He had the opportunity to change his legacy and how he would be remembered.
While it is doubtful many of us will leave a legacy such as the Nobel Prize, taking a few steps toward just being a kind person is possible NOW and within our reach.
